Offshore Medicals/OGUK/UKOOA MEDICALS
Every offshore worker must undergo and pass a medical examination which classifies them as medically fit to work in the offshore environment.. Similarly, any seafarer, under the Merchant Shipping Regulations 2009, is required to hold a valid medical certificate attesting their medical fitness to perform their duties.
Our doctors are approved by the UK Offshore Operators Association Health Advisory Committee, the Norwegian Health Board and by the Maritime Coastal Agency to carry out such examinations.
Some operators have their own requirements for offshore and seafarer medical examinations. We are able to meet any such requirements. Please forward any relevant forms at the time the appointment is made.

UKOOA/OGUK Medicals-Speedy and Economical
Although UKOOA sets out the minimum to be included in the medical sometimes doctors carry out a more in-depth examination if need be.
A typical examination will begin with you filling out a form on your medical history, and lifestyle e.g. alcohol consumption, exercise etc. Following this, the following will be carried out:
- Physical examination by the doctor
- Height, weight and resultant Body Mass Index calculation
- Blood pressure and pulse
- Vision testing
- Lung function testing
- Hearing test
- Urine check
- The doctor will also discuss the form you filled in, and carry out any additional checks they think necessary.
An UKOOA medical certificate is valid for a maximum of 2 years. Occasionally, employers request the examination to be carried out more frequently.
Some employers may ask for additional checks, e.g. drug test, to be carried out and may be Heart or lungs related etc checks , If indicated.
The Maritime Coastal Agency has its own standards for the medical examination and this includes:
- Medical History
- Physical examination by the approved doctor
- Urine check
- In depth visual assessment
- Hearing check
An unrestricted ENG1 certificate is valid for 2 years.
